Training Programme 2025

Come and learn to Sail on the picturesque Menai Strait.  During 2025 PDSC are offering a range of training courses.  All training courses are subject to demand – additional courses will be offered subject to demand.  All training programmes require the individual to be a current member of PDSC (Individual / Family / Junior / Youth). Pathway Training is open to members of any Welsh Sailing Club. Course booking and membership application is via WebCollect.   Please reach out to our Training Principal for further information on any course or training queries and our Pathway Co-ordinator for any queries relating to the Pathway programme.

Current RYA Training Course Programme

Adult RYA Stage 1 & 2
    Course Dates – 24 May 2025 – 26 May 2025     Course cost – £140 (Members only)     Skills required – None Our RYA Adult training courses combine the RYA Level 1 and Level 2 to provide you with the skills and confidence to sail and make decisions in good conditions.
  • Dinghy Level 1 – Start Sailing – An introduction to sailing dinghies for complete beginners, covering everything you need to know to get afloat under supervision.
  • Dinghy Level 2 – Basic Skills – Build your confidence and develop your skills.
Having successfully completed the course, you will have a basic knowledge of sailing and should be capable of sailing launching / returning to the beach without an instructor in good conditions (light / medium winds).
Junior RYA Stage 1 & 2

    Course Dates – 24 May 2025 – 26 May 2025

    Course cost – £100 (Members only)

    Skills required – None

The Junior/Youth Sailing scheme is usually completed in small dinghies suitable for the size of the sailor (Optimist, RS Terra, Pico etc).

  • Youth Sailing Scheme – Start Sailing Stage 1 – An introduction to the parts of the boat and the basic principles of how to get a boat sailing
  • Youth Sailing Scheme – Start Sailing Stage 2 – Develop the skills needed to sail around a course and understand the basic principles needed to become a confident sailor

Having successfully completed the course, you will be able to sail and make decisions on and off the water in good conditions.

RYA Pathway Coaching

See Pathway page for details of the pathway programme.  The coaching is being held across a series of 2 day sessions with the following dates currently confirmed.

Informal Training

For 2025 PD Pirates runs on the following Sunday afternoons between 13:30 and 1600.

Friday Evening / Sunday Afternoon / Informal Class Coaching

At all Friday evening and Sunday afternoon open sailing sessions an experienced sailor / coach will be available to provide guidance and knowledge to those who which to develop their skill set in an informal manner. 

Class coaching is run on an as required and self help basis using club facilities usually organised (often at short notice) through one of our class WhatsApp groups. Please contact through the club training email.

 

Instructor Training

Assistant Instructors (AI) Course is run alongside PD Pirates for junior/youth members wanting to develop their general skills and abilities. Aimed at potential Instructors – many of our previous AIs have gone on to work in the marine industry or gained part time paid employment teaching sailing. Normally this is a prerequisite for further certified training.
